Diamond Coating Engineered to Prevent Clots in Tiny Spaces of Infant Heart
The Jarvik 2000 infant heart (photo, top right) is about the size of an AAA battery. A new diamond surface coating (the black area on the pump inflow in the photo at bottom right) is being developed in collaboration with Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc. to reduce the risk of blood clotting in the tiny pump flow channels. This is expected to reduce the need for blood thinning medications and improve patient safety.
